"Control of metabolic homeostasis at the single-cell level"

An essential feature of metabolic regulation is the ability to adjust metabolite flux to support functions including cell growth and division. To understand how this homeostatic process functions at the level of a single cell, we have combined live-cell reporters for AMPK, a central energy-sensing kinase, and for key metabolites including ATP and NADH. In response to metabolic stresses, this approach reveals cellular heterogeneity in metabolic state and interlocked oscillations in signaling and metabolic parameters. Our results highlight the importance of continuous, dynamic feedback regulation in balancing anabolic and catabolic processes within the cell.
