The Weijers lab focuses on the mechanisms that underlie multicellular development in plants, using the early embryo as a model. Early embryogenesis in Arabidopsis is highly predictable, and in a few rounds of cell division, precursors for all major tissues and stem cells are specified, and spatially patterned. Key questions are how genetic regulation controls these processes, and how cellular decisions are instructed by developmental regulators. In this seminar, Dolf Weijers will focus on two aspects. First, he will discuss the team’s efforts to generate a genome-wide atlas of gene activity at cellular resolution in the early Arabidopsis embryo, as well as the insights in transcriptional reprogramming that underlies cell type specification. Second, he will describe recent work to understand the control of cellular reorganisation that underlies asymmetric cell division and cell polarity.
