Transport in Ghent

The easiest way to get about in Ghent is by bus or tram of the public transport company de Lijn. The three-day pass of 12 EUR gives you unlimited travel possibilities for three days and is the same price as 4 single tickets of 3 EUR to go forth and back to Zwijnaarde those two days. You can buy this pass in the online e-shop (in Dutch), in an advance sales point or in ‘de Lijnwinkel’ at the front of the railway station (Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 12:15 and from 12:45 to 7 PM). If you would stay longer (for the weekend) to visit Ghent, you can buy a five-day pass (17 EUR). A  one day pass is valid on the day of the first validation until 3:59 AM the following day.

If you bought your day pass from ‘de Lijnwinkel’, you have to validate it by inserting it in the yellow reader at the entrance (you do not have to select zones) every time you get on a bus or tram. If you bought your day pass from the driver, it is immediately valid (you do not have to validate it yourself), but you do have to validate it again every time you take the next bus or tram.

To get to the conference venue in Technologiepark, Zwijnaarde, you need to take one of following buses at the Gent Sint-Pieters railway station:

  • at the front, platform 10: bus 47 (direction Oudenaarde), bus 49 (platform 10, direction Geraardsbergen)
  • at the back, platform 24: bus 70 (direction Zwijnaarde), bus 71 (direction Nazareth) or bus 72 (direction Merelbeke).

After about fifteen minutes, you will cross the bridge over the canal and the E40 motorway, and you have get off at one of the following two stops:

bus stops

  1. The first stop marked 'Bollebergen' (for all buses). The Technologiepark is on the other side of the large roundabout. Walk into the park, go straight on at the roundabout; the VIB-UGent research building is the first building on the left.
  2. The third stop marked ‘Technologiepark’ (for all buses except bus 47). The Technologiepark is straight in front of you on the other side of road. Walk into the park, go straight on until you reach a T-junction; the VIB-UGent research building is located across on the right.

In the evening, you can take the same buses back (every 5 or 35 min past the hour, but you have to be there 5 min earlier) to the Gent Sint-Pieters railway station at the bus stops just across these two stops.

Directions to the city center

At the front of the Gent Sint-Pieters railway station, you need to take tram 1 or bus 22 to the city center.
