Wout Boerjan named Forest Biotechnologist of the Year

Molecular geneticist Wout Boerjan of the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) and the University of Ghent (UGent) was named Forest Biotechnologist of the Year.

By awarding him this title, the international Institute of Forest Biotechnology (IFB) is recognizing Boerjan’s life’s work. According to the IFB, Boerjan is among the world’s top scientists in the field of tree biotechnology. In deciding, the jury also gave special consideration to the VIB field proof with genetically modified poplars, as Boerjan focuses his research on sustainable applications of biotechnology such as the production of biofuels and biomaterials. Finally, the award also recognizes Boerjan’s efforts to educate the broader public about the responsible application of biotechnology.
