Research gaining momentum by silencing genes

Along with five European academic laboratories, researchers from the Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) connected to Ghent University are accelerating the study of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.

Taking advantage of the new RNAi technology, they are able to study the function of genes with the aid of specially designed fragments that turn off the corresponding genes. The scientists are building a collection of such fragments in Arabidopsis. Their ultimate goal is to contribute to the elucidation of the functions of all the genes in this model organism. Furthermore, this collection will also benefit research into other organisms, namely humans and animals.

Onderzoek in stroomversnelling door genen het zwijgen op te leggen

Onderzoekers van het Vlaams Interuniversitair Instituut voor Biotechnologie (VIB) verbonden aan de UGent versnellen, samen met 5 Europese academische laboratoria, het onderzoek van de modelplant Arabidopsis thaliana. Met de nieuwe technologie RNAi kan men immers de functie van genen bestuderen met behulp van specifiek ontworpen fragmenten die de overeenkomstige genen het zwijgen opleggen. De wetenschappers leggen een grote verzameling aan van zulke fragmenten voor de studie van Arabidopsisgenen. Hun uiteindelijk doel is bij te dragen tot de ontrafeling van alle genen van dit modelorganisme. Dit zal ook onderzoek van andere organismen, zoals mens en dier, ten goede komen.
